What Does MERV Mean and Why Is It Important?

MERV. What does it mean? Why is it important? You may have noticed this
word as you searched for new filters for your furnace, but if you don’t
understand what it means and why it’s important chances are, your
home’s heating system won’t be working up to its full potential
this winter.

Let’s start with the basics – what does MERV mean? It stands for
Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value which in plain English means “how
effective is this air filter?”

MERV Ratings Explained

The scaled used to rate air filters when it comes to the MERV system ranges
from 1-16. The higher the rating, the fewer dust particles and other airborne
contaminants can get through, though higher ratings don’t always
mean the filter is better. Filters are commonly tested for things like
pollen, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander and tobacco smoke.

Proper Maintenance

Since filters with high ratings make it more difficult for particles to
pass through, airborne pollutants tend to build up on the filter more
frequently. As a result, they require more frequent maintenance – whether
it’s changing or replacing the filter completely. Neglecting your
furnace filters can cause your system to work much harder than it has
to and can potentially lead to severe damage.
