When is it Time to Replace My Pipes?

If you own a property, you know there are always maintenance issues to
deal with. They can be quite the headache, right? While we can often get
by without fixing every little tiny thing that goes wrong, failing to
deal with major structural or mechanical issues is a much bigger concern.
This is certainly the case when dealing with plumbing corrosion or leaking pipes.

What Type of Pipes Do I Have?

In most older homes, plumbing was installed with galvanized steel which
is coated in zinc to protect it against corrosion. However, the coating
does erode over time leaving the pipes susceptible to corrosion. The worst
part? You may not even realize your pipes are breaking down.

What Causes Pipe Corrosion?

Water in its purest form does not readily corrode, but unfortunately, that’s
not what our homes are dealing with on a regular basis. Our water is filled
with minerals that can really take a toll on the structural integrity
of our plumbing systems.

Tap water can be low in calcium and contain dissolved carbon dioxide gas
and have a low pH condition. This, plus a host of other minerals and conditions
is the perfect recipe for disaster.

Here’s what you should be keeping a close eye out for, that could
signal your pipes are on their last legs:

  • Calcification Build Up Around Piping Junctures (chalky discoloration)

  • Leaks

  • Reduced Water Flow

  • Green Corrosion on Copper Piping

  • Rusty Orange Corrosion of Galvanized Steel Pipes

Notice any of the above on or around the pipes in your home? That means
it’s time to call a professional plumber. After all, you’ll
save a fortune (not to mention the headaches) by being proactive and replacing
your pipes before everything “goes down the drain.” Give
