How to Fix a Slow Flush

Got a toilet that takes more than 3-4 seconds to flush? How about one that doesn’t completely flush all of the contents in the bowl? A slow or weak flush is a problem that thousands of homeowners face and there are a few reasons why it could be happening. See below to learn more:

  1. Not Enough Water In The Tank: if it seems like the water level in the tank is lower than where it should be, you may just need to adjust the float to allow more water to enter. Because each toilet is different, it’s best to look for the manufacturer’s instructions. It’s also important to keep in mind that the float is delicate. Be careful not to damage or bend the rod that attaches it to the valve.

  2. A Clogged Trap Or Vent Pipe: if you’ve been flushing things down the toilet other than human waste and toilet paper and you have a slow or weak flush, there’s a good chance you have a clog in the pipes. If the problem is in the trap you can usually solve it with a standard plunger, but if that doesn’t work try a toilet auger. If this doesn’t do the trick, run a plumber’s snake down the vent pipe.

  3. Flapper Working Incorrectly: in order for the toilet tank to drain enough to flush completely, the flapper has to lift high enough away from the hole. Check the length of the flapper chain and make it a bit shorter to allow more water to flow through the flushing system.
