Fast Fixes for a Leaky Shower Head

Drip. Drip. Drip. Is that leaky shower head of yours driving you crazy? Not only is it annoying to listen to, but a leaky shower head is wasting upwards of 10 gallons of water each day. So to put an end to the problem once and hopefully for all, follow the fast fix tips below:

Sometimes all it takes is tightening the shower head at the arm to stop the dripping. Most of the time, this can be done by hand. But if that doesn’t work, you may need to break out the toolbox.

Remove the shower head using a strap wrench to protect it from scratches. Notice limescale buildup? This can be causing the shower head to operate incorrectly, so wipe it away with a damp cloth. Then spray the arm and grooves with vinegar to loosen any remaining debris.

Inspect the actual shower head for worn or damaged threads and if you notice anything wrong, it’s best to replace the shower head. If that’s not it, look at the inlet for a small rubber gasket.

Worn or torn gaskets are prone to leaking to replace them right away. You can usually find a plethora of gaskets at any local hardware or home improvement store, just be sure to find one that matches your old one.

Before installing a new shower head, or reinstalling the old one be sure to wrap the threads of the arm with Teflon tape. Teflon tape helps prevent leaks by creating a tight seal between the shower head and the arm.
