Preparing for a Blizzard

Is your home ready to outlast a blizzard? Snow can be beautiful and all but most of us quickly change our minds when it starts falling hard. Some Minnesota winter storms are strong enough to keep people inside for a few days at a time so it’s vital to make sure you’re prepared ahead of time.

Aside from stocking up on food, milk and a few additional staples you need to think about a few other winter storm necessities:

Backup Sump Pump: of course temperatures have to be freezing for snow to fall but what happens when it gets a bit warmer and the snow starts to melt? You could end up with a flooded basement. Having a backup battery sump pump will become your, and your basement’s, best friend should you find yourself in this situation.

Weatherstripping: air leaks and drafts can become even more noticeable during a storm. Have an extra roll of weatherseal tape on hand for a temporary fix.

Fuel: a couple of items in your emergency storm kit may require fuel. If you want to make sure your generator doesn’t run out of gas before power is restored, having a few extra airtight gas cans is a must.

Warm Blankets: a powerful storm can easily wipe out power which could be needed to run your home’s heating system. Stock on up on warm blankets and a few heavy sweatshirts because let’s face it – nobody wants to be left in the cold.
