Programmable Thermostats vs. Wifi Thermostats

Do you still have to walk over to thermostat to tell it how warm or how cool you want your house to feel various times throughout the day? Chances are you’ve had one of these in your home at some point if you don’t have one anymore, and trust us when we tell you we’re thankful that we can kiss those days goodbye. Nowadays, there are two types of technologically advanced thermostats that have made their way into homes across the world: programmable thermostats and WiFi thermostats.

If you’re still turning the dial or sliding a plastic tab to change the temperature, you’re also spending way more than you should be on energy bills. If you’re like some homeowners in the Twin Cities and are afraid of change, this is one change you’ll thank us for in the long run. It’s time to put that old thermostat to rest and upgrade to a programmable or WiFi model today.

So, what are the major differences between the two? We’re going to break it down for you below.

Programmable Thermostats:

These models allow you to set a schedule for the thermostat’s operation. For example, you can program it so that the heat kicks on to 68ºF weekdays at 6am, 12pm and 6pm and drops down to 66ºF before you go to bed.

While some models only allow one schedule for the entire week, others allow you to set one schedule for weekdays and another for the weekend.

WiFi Thermostats:

WiFi, or smart, thermostats solve just about all of the problems that arise with strictly programmable models. These models give you complete control of the comfort level inside your home every day of the week and every hour of the day. These capabilities eliminate unnecessary heating and cooling which allows you to save on energy bills.

In addition to more flexible schedules, WiFi thermostats can be controlled from you smartphone, laptop or tablet. Want the heat to come on just before you arrive home? You can take care of it from your mobile device before you leave the office. How nice is that?
