How to Fix a Leaky Toilet in the Twin Cities

In honor of Fix A Leak Week we are kicking off with ways to fix a leaky toilet. Have you noticed that it sounds like water is constantly running in your toilet or even worse, water on the floor? A small leak can lead to a major plumbing disaster so pay close attention below and make sure to call in a professional if you can’t fix the problem yourself.

Does It Sink or Float?

The first thing you should take a look at if water is constantly running in the bowl is the inside of the tank. According to DIY Network, “if the water level rises above the overflow tube, the problem may be with the float or the inlet valve on the ballcock.” The float’s purpose is to rise with the water level until it spills through the overflow tube which indicates that the water should shut off. If the water isn’t shutting off as it spills into the overflow tube, the float may need some adjusting.

Check The Flapper

The second possible source of a leaky toilet is the flapper. The chain may be preventing it from dropping all the way into the seat or the rubber piece may have deteriorated over time. Replacing the flapper is quite simple – all you need to do is drain the tank and the the water off at the shutoff valve. Flush the toilet by holding down the handle and replace the flapper. Just make sure you replace it with the proper size (it may be a good idea to bring the old one with you to your local hardware store).
