If you’re one of those people who automatically reaches for the phone every time you have a minor drain clog, take a deep breath - there’s no need to panic! While most plumbing issues require the knowledge and expertise of a professional, there are a few tasks you might be able to conquer yourself. Clearing a backed up toilet and a sink drain are just a few of them.
If you get nervous when you try to flush your toilet because it looks like it’s going to overflow, don’t worry you’re not alone. As if a clogged drain wasn’t bad enough, the thought of a flooded bathroom might really give you gray hairs. Instead of stressing, here’s what you can do:
Grab a plunger and try plunging the clog.
If that doesn’t work, you can use a snake. It will burrow into the blockage and loosen the clog.
Simply rotate the drum of the snake back and forth to dislodge the blockage.
Clogged Sink Drain
Sink drains deal with a plethora of clog-causing substances on a daily basis. Hair is among the most common causes and the blockage usually occurs near the pop-up assembly of the drain. To unclog the drain:
Remove the spring tab from the drain plug adjustment arm.
Then remove the ball valve from the sink trap.
Now for the fun part: pull out the pop-up plug and remove the dirt and debris causing the clog.
