How to Silence Your Baseboard Heat

Picture your heat kicking on this winter without the squeaking and cracking of the pipes in your baseboard. What a relief that would be. If you’re fed up with the noise and commotion, read below to find out how you can achieve some peace and quiet.

Noisy heating systems are common in older Twin Cities – St. Paul homes, so if you can’t deal with the noise don’t worry, you’re not alone. Some homeowners choose to use their heat as little as possible during the cooler months just so they don’t have to deal with the headache, but that’s not the best option. With some elbow grease and a bit of maintenance, you can quiet your baseboard heat.

Why Do Baseboard Heaters Make Noise?

The cracking and squeaking you are hearing comes as a result of the pipe expanding. Back in the day, plumbers used mechanical expansion pipes and then moved to coiled springs. These aren’t necessary in most cases today, you just need to find the place where the moving pipe is touching another piece of metal or wood.

How To Quiet a Noisy Baseboard Heater

Look at the carriers – the carrier is designed to hold up the return pipe and the heating element. As long it’s not coming into contact with the expansion pipe you can move on to the slider. The slider is a plastic piece on the element that should be located directly in the middle of the carrier. You can place a piece of pipe insulation around the pipe, or another type of clip to break the friction between the pipe and the carrier.
